EZ PZ RPG

Your character plays itself: the 2015 auto-battling MMORPG that closed in February 2016.

by Reality Squared Game Co. · 2015 · iOS / Android (defunct)

EZ PZ RPG was a 2015 mobile MMORPG with a radical customer promise: your character plays itself. Choose a class, and it auto-battles, loots, crafts and levels around the clock with no input from you, which made it either the most honest MMO ever made or a pointed satire of all the others. Reality Squared ran it from 2015 until the official Facebook page announced closure on 15 February 2016.

What the loop feels like

You pick a class and the game begins playing you: bosses fall, gear drops, crafts complete, guild activity hums along, all while you watch or do not. The joke and the feature were the same thing. That's EZ PZ RPG.

Marketing in some markets sold it as RPG To Go, an MMORPG that fits around your life by removing you from the equation entirely, and the recovered screenshots show a surprisingly complete game for its size: character sheets, boss fights at levelled thresholds, guild structures, the whole MMO furniture arranged around a player who is mostly decorative. That's EZ PZ RPG.

The systems doing the work

What the record documents is the full MMO skeleton running unattended: class selection as the one meaningful choice, auto-battling combat against levelled bosses, loot and crafting loops, guilds, and continuous progression designed to run around the clock. It belongs to the first sincere wave of what the genre now calls idle MMORPGs, released a decade before the model became a mobile staple, and the review galleries from the era, MMOs.com and MMOHuts among them, treat it as a curiosity with real systems underneath the gimmick. The gimmick was the systems: there was no manual mode waiting behind a settings toggle, the automation was the product.

Where it stumbles

It is dead, and it has been dead since February 2016. The official domain fails DNS, the servers are closed, the store listings are stale shells, and no playable version survives. As a design it also carried its own critique: strip the player out of an MMO and what remains is a progress bar wearing a guild tabard, which is exactly the conversation its modern descendants still have with their players. What survives is documentation: a recovered media set of ten screenshots from the review galleries plus the trailer, and a paper trail of closure announcements.

Playing it today

You cannot, and this entry sits in the record for that reason. The archived reviews at MMOs.com are the best-preserved window into what it was. For living descendants of the self-playing RPG, Progress Quest is the founding ancestor and Clicker Heroes is the commercial proof the model works without the MMORPG set dressing.

The verdict

A historical entry from the first wave of self-playing MMOs: closed, documented, and weirdly prescient about where mobile RPGs were going. The character is still levelling, somewhere, in principle.
