Pixel Pets

Nine species of procedurally-loved pixel pets: Jake Trower's complete HTML5 clicker.

by Jake Trower (jakeonaut) · 2016 · Web (cakeandturtles.nfshost.com)

Pixel Pets is Jake Trower's complete HTML5 pet clicker, live at the official page on his personal host: nine species of pixel pets to hatch, raise and collect into a codex, with the whole thing drawn by code rather than art files. It dates to 2016 and the wiki row of the r/incremental_games list marks it complete, which the surviving source tree backs up.

What the loop feels like

You hatch your first pet, click it through its growth, and the codex opens a species you have never heard of and immediately want: a Pup first, then maybe a Hog, then the strange end of the roster, a Pillar, a Squirm, a Peep, a Sprout, a Blubby, a Glob, and finally a Dribble. You interact with the ones you like and the clicker carries the rest. That's Pixel Pets.

Then you notice the collection is the game. Every species has its own codex entry, the roster is finished rather than expanding, and the satisfaction is completing a small fixed menagerie rather than chasing an infinite curve. You close the tab, come back tomorrow, and your pets are still there because the progress lives in your browser. That's Pixel Pets.

How it actually works

Under the hood it is a JavaScript canvas application: the site loads its own engine files (PixelPet.js and PetSpecies.js) and draws every sprite from code, with no pet image files at all. Species are codified data objects, nine of them from the domestic Pup to the abstract Dribble, and local data managers keep your progress in the browser itself. The clicker layer is the growth engine: you click to develop a pet, the pet matures into its species entry, and collection completion is the terminal goal. There is no server account to make, nothing to install, and no story beyond the roster.

Where it stumbles

Honest gaps first: our research pass found no independent review coverage and no active community around this game, so what follows is grounded in the artifact itself rather than a consensus. The design is minimal by any modern measure: a fixed nine-species roster, a single interaction verb, and a save file that lives only in your browser, so clearing site data clears the collection. The code-drawn canvas visuals are charming in a scrappy way but offer little variation, and the personal host behind it is exactly the kind of URL that outlives its owner's attention. Treat it as a complete small artifact, not a service.

Playing it today

It is free in the browser at the official page, playable on desktop and verified live at research time. One disambiguation matters: this is not Pixel Petz, the mobile pet-collect game, and not the various itch.io Pixel-titled games; it is Trower's web original. If pet collecting is the hook, Kitty Clicker and Capybara Clicker work the same vein with more recent coats of paint.

The verdict

A small, complete, code-drawn pet collection clicker with the best species names in the catalog: Blubby and Dribble alone earn the entry, and the finished codex gives it an ending most idle games never bother with.
