Soda Dungeon

Pop the top on legendary action: raid dungeons with party members you recruited at a tavern that sells soda. Free, mobile-born, desktop-ported.

by AN Productions, Poxpower · 2017-02-06 · Steam / iOS / Android

Soda Dungeon begins with the best offer in gaming: a tavern that sells fizzy drinks to adventurers, and a dungeon out back that will bankrupt anyone who enters unprepared. AN Productions and Poxpower’s free-to-play dungeon crawler, published by Armor Games Studios in February 2017 and ported from its mobile origins to desktop, makes you the tavern owner who assembles the parties, upgrades the pub that attracts better adventurers, and sends the thirsty down into the depths. The Steam page is admirably honest that this is not quite a passive game: it offers enough for players who want to roll up their sleeves, not just watch numbers.

What the loop feels like

The first scene is the recruitment. The tavern fills, a knight walks in fresh off a soda, and the party you assembled descends into the dungeon while you manage the fight from the composition you chose.

The second scene is the wipe. The party falls at a deep floor, but the loot the thieves stole banks anyway, the tavern gets a renovation that makes that floor feel like a tutorial, and the next party walks down better prepared. That’s Soda Dungeon.

Where it stumbles

Honest gaps first: this entry is built from store and platform research rather than deep community criticism, so late-game balance notes are under-documented here. What the structure makes plain: the dungeon run itself is hands-off enough that players wanting moment-to-moment combat will find it light, and being a mobile-born free-to-play title, the premium currency sits near the progression the way it always does.

Playing it today

It is free on Steam and on Google Play in its original home, with a sequel, Soda Dungeon 2, carrying the franchise forward with a town to upgrade and crafting. For more party-based idle crawling, Incremental Adventures and Yolk Heroes: A Long Tamago are kindred spirits.

The verdict

A mobile idle classic that earned its desktop port. Wipe on purpose, bank the loot, and remember to bring a healer this time.
