Amino Idle
You are a lone cell becoming conscious. A small thing in a large universe.
by judgementalfish · November 2023 · Web (defunct)
Amino Idle is a 2023 text incremental about being a single cell that is slowly, reluctantly becoming conscious. It is about evolution the way the best of the genre is: as a joke about scale, and then, quietly, as something lonelier than that.
It came out in November 2023 from a developer known only as judgementalfish, an ad-free passion project built on cellular biology and procedural generation, gathered a small devoted audience, and then development stopped and the domain lapsed: the play URL now serves a parked for-sale page where the game used to be.
What the loop felt like
A cell sat in a dark primordial soup on your screen, and the text chose what to tell you about it: awareness arriving in fragments, structures growing, the world quietly building itself while you watched. That's Amino Idle.
Then a research milestone arrived, the next step of growth locked behind a branch you had not fed, and you balanced passive generation against the bottleneck while the simulation drifted on. Also that's Amino Idle.

The systems doing the work
What set it apart was simulation-driven mechanics rather than abstract counters: the game built its loops around randomized procedural systems including cellular automata, flocking behavior, pathfinding optimisation and maze generation, and as those structures interacted the world visually evolved, generating unique layouts per playthrough. The theme was cell biology all the way down, giving it an educational, meditative atmosphere that players compared to the classic minimalist register of A Dark Room.
Progression was strictly research-gated: advancement relied on unlocking structural and biological milestones, and hitting a wall where the next step of growth sat entirely behind a specific research branch was a defining loop. The community's organic advice followed from that: play on desktop, because the pathfinding and rendering demand real performance; balance passive resource generation toward research prerequisites rather than short-term active gains; and refresh the tab strategically during long sessions.
Where it stumbles
The friction points were real even when the game was alive. There was no offline progression: the simulation generally only advanced while the tab was open and active, which dampens the idle promise. Performance was a recurring complaint, with lag, unpolished pacing and memory leaks during longer sessions, and the game was notoriously unoptimised for mobile browsers. Save management lacked import and export tools or deep history, so long runs lived dangerously on a single browser profile. All of that was forgivable for a solo passion project in active development. Whether it is forgivable now, with development stopped, is a fairer question.
Playing it today
The original URL is a for-sale page, verified in this rewrite. The June 2024 Wayback capture preserves the page at title-screen fidelity, though whether the game fully runs from the archive depends on which of its scripts were captured. There was never a Steam or mobile release, so the archive is the only door, and it is a narrow one.
The verdict
A small, promising, abandoned experiment: the genre keeps producing one-cell consciousness stories, and this was one of the better-received 2023 entries before its hosting fell over. What remains is the idea, a simulation that evolves itself while the text mourns beautifully, and a warning about hosting your passion project on a domain you do not renew. The archive remembers it, and so does this page.
