Birdfull

A watercolor backyard birdwatching idler: feed, decorate, and let the eggs accumulate while the birds decide whether to stay.

by BurGum Games · 11 March 2025 · Steam

Birdfull is a small, genuinely relaxing idle game from solo developer BurGum Games, out on Steam since March 2025. The premise is exactly what the title promises: an American backyard, hand-painted in scanned watercolor, that fills up with birds as long as you keep the feed coming. Eggs trickle in in real time, the market turns them into seed and garden furniture, and the birds, fickle creatures, only stay as long as the buffet holds. There are no numbers to optimize here, just species to meet.

What the loop feels like

You scatter a new blend of premium seed by the bench you bought yesterday, and within a minute a bird you have never logged lands, samples the goods, and checks your yard against its comfort standards. You open the guidebook, pin its profile, and note that it prefers the perch near the birdbath. That's Birdfull.

You leave it running behind your work email all afternoon. When you look back, the feeder traffic has thickened, a pair of regulars has coupled up and started producing more valuable eggs, and a passing pigeon you tap for bonus currency has left a little pocket money behind. That's Birdfull.

The named systems doing the work

The economy starts with passive egg generation: eggs accrue in real time based on which birds are visiting, and rarer species pay better. Eggs are spent at the marketplace on birdseed varieties, feeders, and landscape objects, and the attraction and feeding loop means different food and environment combinations pull in different, rarer species. Landscape upgrades raise perching capacity and comfort, which is how you convince transient birds to linger rather than leave. Special facilities can keep favored birds around longer, or even forever, and pairing birds into loving couples boosts egg value. A built-in guidebook tracks species profiles and real-world fact cards, achievements unlock special bird variants, and offline progression keeps the yard producing while the game is closed. It is idle in the truest sense: the game is happy to be ignored, and prettier when you glance back.

Where it stumbles

The most common critique is pacing. The late-game yard upgrades are priced for patience, and saving toward them can stall the loop for long stretches if you play actively rather than passively. Second, the birds are tenants, not trophies: unlike most collection games, they eventually fly away unless you keep feeding and maintaining the space, which stings if you return after a long offline break to find your favorites gone. And the design is unapologetically minimal; there is no depth to optimize, no strategy layer, nothing to master. If your idle games need a spreadsheet, this backyard will feel empty. If they need birdsong, it is perfect.

Playing it today

Birdfull is on Steam for Windows, budget-priced and frequently discounted, with Steam Cloud, save-anytime support, mouse-only and touch-only options, and full custom volume controls, so it doubles as ambient desk software. BurGum Games has no other platform releases to point you at; Steam is the venue. If you want the same cozy register with a bit more active play, our Zombidle entry is the loud comedy version of tending a yard.

The verdict

A tiny, lovely thing that knows exactly what it is: watercolor birds, real facts, ambient sound worth leaving on, and an economy that asks for patience more than attention. As a second-monitor companion it is close to the top of the genre, and as a birdwatching diary it is quietly educational. Put the seed out.
