Build a Spaceship
Hevipelle's pre-Antimatter side project: build a ship, mine a planet, repeat.
by Hevipelle · 2016 · Web
Build a Spaceship is a 2016 web incremental by Hevipelle, who would go on to make a small game called Antimatter Dimensions. This is the earlier, smaller thing: a developer warming up with ore, ship parts and a growing hull, one year before the dimension cascade made their name.
What the loop feels like
You mine ore, the ore buys ship parts, and the ship parts reach new planets. The loop is a straight line from pickaxe to orbit and it does not pretend otherwise. That's Build a Spaceship.
Each exoplanet is a fresh resource pool with its own twist, and the ship in the middle of the screen grows chunkier with every upgrade, a visual progress bar made of actual ship. Also that's Build a Spaceship.

The systems doing the work
An honesty note on sources: our AI research passes matched to a different, much larger spaceship idle, so their output was discarded, and this entry rests on the game itself, its hosting record and its place in the developer's history. What the game supports is the classic three-stage mining loop: manual and automated ore extraction, ore converted into ship components, and components unlocking new destinations whose resource pools feed back into the next tier of construction. It is the resource-tier template executed at modest scale, and its historical interest comes almost entirely from the name on it.
Where it stumbles
Small is the operative word. The content is brief, the systems are the genre's starter kit, and there is no prestige architecture to speak of, because this predates the design ambitions its developer later became known for. Presentation is functional web-game minimalism of 2016. As a game it is an afternoon; as an artifact of where Antimatter Dimensions came from, it is a genuinely charming footnote.
Playing it today
Hosted free on Hevipelle's GitHub Pages, verified live in this rewrite, playable in any browser with nothing to install. For the developer's main event, the catalogue's Antimatter Dimensions entry covers the phenomenon this was the warm-up for.
The verdict
A charming space-mining loop from the Antimatter Dimensions developer's early period, and one of the more interesting "before they were famous" artifacts in the genre. Historically interesting, pleasantly playable, and free. Mine the ore, build the ship, then go see what the same brain did next.
Its place in the lineage is the quiet draw. The developer who would later stack twelve BitNodes and a Reality layer started here, with one resource, one ship and a row of planets. Every incremental developer's history has a Build a Spaceship in it; most of them do not stay playable for a decade.
