Antimatter Dimensions

Buy 8 dimensions, watch antimatter cascade, reset for Infinity, then Eternity, then Reality.

by Hevipelle · Dec 17, 2022 (Steam) · Web / Steam / Android / iOS

Antimatter Dimensions starts with two numbers on a screen: how much antimatter you have, and how many First Dimensions you own. First Dimensions produce Second Dimensions, which produce Third Dimensions, all the way down to Eighth. The cascade is the game, and it has been running since Hevipelle started it as a solo web project in 2016.

It is free everywhere it exists, it is Very Positive on Steam across thousands of reviews, and it is widely considered the game that proved prestige layers could stack deeper than a single reset.

What the loop feels like

You buy ten of a dimension and its output doubles, you feed the cascade, and the antimatter counter starts climbing in scientific notation. Then the reset button appears, and the whole run folds into a single new currency. That's Antimatter Dimensions.

Each new layer recontextualises everything beneath it: what felt like an endgame wall at Infinity becomes a speed bump once Eternity unlocks Time Dimensions, and Reality turns the whole thing into a glyph-stacking min-max puzzle. That's Antimatter Dimensions.

The systems doing the work

The nested dimension loop is the engine: Eighth Dimensions produce Seventh, and so on down, with Tickspeed upgrades accelerating the whole chain and the classic Sacrifice mechanic trading your first seven dimension tiers for a boost to the Eighth. The prestige cascade is the architecture, and it is the reason this game is famous: Dimension Boosts expand the tier structure, Antimatter Galaxies buy permanent Tickspeed scaling, Infinity at 1.79e308 antimatter awards Infinity Points, autobuyers and challenges, Eternity introduces Eternity Points and the branching Time Study tree, and Reality adds glyphs, a perk tree and black hole management.

The autobuyers deserve special mention, because they turn the game into a puzzle about automation: the late game is effectively writing a logical script, through in-game settings, that optimises your prestige loops for you. Community strategy follows from the math: clear zones you can one-shot before pushing higher, execute Challenges that handicap your ruleset for rewards, and lean on the fandom guide and community calculators, which are practically part of the game.

Where it stumbles

The complaints are consistent. The pacing front-loads its charm: the first Infinity is unforgettable and the road to Reality is long, mathematical, and occasionally a second job. Presentation is spreadsheets-with-icons by design, and players allergic to scientific notation will not be converted. The sheer stack of systems also makes it a poor starter game; newcomers bounced off it for years before the community guide matured. None of this is hidden, and none of it involves spending money: there are no microtransactions anywhere in the design.

The verdict

Antimatter Dimensions is the game that turned prestige from a mechanic into an architecture, and its influence shows up in every multi-layer incremental that followed. The community around it, guides, calculators, the Reality update's surprisingly earnest lore, is one of the most dedicated in the genre. It is enormous, free, and rigorous; the only cost is the hours you will lose arguing with yourself about Tickspeed.
