Derivative Clicker
Buy derivative generators that buy mathematicians that buy computers: calculus as an idle game.
by gzgreg · 2015 · Web
Derivative Clicker is gzgreg's calculus incremental, and the joke is structural: you buy a derivative generator, which employs the mathematician who derives it, who is assisted by a computer, and the whole nested chain of academia hums along producing money and mathematical proofs. It has been abandoned for roughly eight years and it is still up, still playable, and still correct about mathematics.
What the loop feels like
You buy a derivative, the derivative employs a mathematician, and the mathematician operates a computer, each layer of the chain producing for the layer above it. That's Derivative Clicker.
The early game is a clicking game, deliberately: money-per-click beats money-per-tick until the generators mature, so your finger earns the academics their funding. Then the proofs stack, prestige resets the chain with a permanent bonus, and the whole ladder climbs again faster. That's Derivative Clicker.

The systems doing the work
The named systems are the nested generator chain, generators, mathematicians, computers, each buying and assisting the others; the two income tracks, active per-click money that dominates early and passive per-tick money that takes over late; mathematical proofs as the parallel currency; and the prestige reset that restarts the chain with compounding bonuses. The last version is v0.341, and the game's entire visual budget is two icons, bitcoin and dogecoin, because it is a 2015 web game and proud of it. There is nothing hidden: every layer of the economy is a line on one page, and the strategy is entirely in the order you buy it.
Where it stumbles
Abandonment is the headline: no updates are coming, ever, and the game wears its age, from the bare HTML presentation to the two-icon art budget. The mid-game leans on patience, the balance was never finished being tuned, and players raised on modern presentation will find it austere to the point of hostility. It is also niche by design, a maths joke with real maths in it, and its devoted community has always been small. None of this breaks the loop; it just means you are visiting a well-preserved fossil, not a living project.
Playing it today
It is live and free at gzgreg.github.io/DerivativeClicker, verified rendering, and mirrored on galaxy.click, the incremental community's library. No official art exists anywhere, so the live gameplay capture here is the best imagery available, and that is part of its charm. For the genre's deeper takes on layered economies, Cookie Clicker is the sentimental foundation and Kittens Game shows what a small mathematically honest web idle can grow into.
The verdict
A niche math idle with a devoted small community: if the nested-generator joke appeals, the proofs are real, and the game is still up. Abandoned but functional, austere but honest, and structurally correct about academia.
