Cookie Clicker
The game that invented the modern idle genre. Click a cookie, buy a grandma, ascend for heavenly chips.
by Orteil (Julien Thiennot) · August 2013 · Web / Steam / Mobile
On 8 August 2013, a French developer called Orteil (Julien Thiennot) published a game about clicking a cookie. It was meant to be a five-minute diversion. Cookie Clicker became the template for an entire genre, and it is still being updated more than a decade later.
What the loop feels like
You click a big cookie to earn cookies, spend cookies on buildings that produce cookies automatically, cursor, grandma, farm, factory, each tier more absurd than the last, and eventually the numbers become astronomical. The first grandma is a joke. The hundredth grandma is a rounding error in an economy you no longer fully understand. That's Cookie Clicker.
Then you reset for heavenly chips, and the whole game gets faster. The prestige loop is where the five-minute diversion becomes a months-long relationship: every run is faster, weirder, and further from the innocent cookie you started with. That's Cookie Clicker.

The systems doing the work
Cookie Clicker was not the first clicker, but it was the first to layer automatic production, prestige mechanics, and escalating absurdity into a single coherent whole. Every idle game that followed borrows something from its DNA: the building tiers, the golden-cookie random events, the heavenly-chip prestige system, the way the narrative gets stranger the longer you play, grandmas results may vary. Its cultural impact is hard to overstate: it crashed browsers, spawned a thousand imitators, got a Steam release in 2021, and turned the word idle from a technical term into a genre name.

Where it stumbles
Age shows at the edges. The pacing is a 2013 curve, slow by the standards of the modern games it inspired, the mid-game leans on golden-cookie luck in ways later design refined away, and the late game assumes a tolerance for very large numbers that not every player shares. None of this dents the historical record; all of it shapes the first evening.
Playing it today
Free in your browser right now at dashnet.org, fully playable and still updated. The Steam edition adds music by C418 of Minecraft fame, Steam achievements and cloud saves to the web original, as a one-time purchase, and both versions receive updates. If this page has a gateway game, it is this one, and half the catalogue exists because of it.
The verdict
The game that invented the modern idle genre: the building tiers, the prestige reset, the golden cookies, and the grandmas are all its inheritance. Free in a browser tab near you. The grandmas are waiting.
