Basic

A grid of ten-by-twenty-one grey buttons. MinMaxia's minimalist masterpiece.

by MinMaxia · 2019 · Web

BASIC is a minimalist web incremental by MinMaxia, the developer behind Clickpocalypse 2, and its title is also its design document: a grid of roughly ten-by-twenty-one grey upgrade buttons on a pale-blue page, buy multipliers from X1 to X100, and nothing else. Version 9 of the purest upgrade-grid in the genre.

It lives at minmaxia.com/basic, free, with its own small subreddit and a sequel (BASIC 2: Gridpocalypse) for those who finish. An honesty note on research: our AI Mode passes discussed generic genre architecture rather than this specific game, so their content was discarded, and everything here rests on the game itself and its community traces.

What the loop feels like

You buy an upgrade, and the numbers get bigger. The button greys out, the next one brightens, and the multiplier column inches forward. That's BASIC.

The grid unlocks column by column, multipliers stack from X1 to X100, and the pale-blue screen quietly becomes the only thing you are looking at. Also that's BASIC.

BASIC: the upgrade grid

The systems doing the work

The game runs the genre's foundational architecture with the label left on: active generation, passive automation, exponential scaling, and number abstraction, the point where digits give way to suffixes and scientific notation because the values have outgrown the alphabet. Milestone thresholds fire multiplier spikes at specific purchase counts, and the only real decision, repeated for twenty columns, is which tier of generator deserves the next dollar. There is no theme, no narrative, no production design; the grid is the art, and the screenshot above was captured live from the running game because the page itself ships no images at all.

Where it stumbles

The purity cuts both ways. With every system abstracted away, there is nothing to attach to: no characters, no jokes, no visual reward for progress beyond a wider multiplier. Players who need goals explained will find none offered, and the endgame is whatever the community decides it is. The subreddit is small, guides are thin, and the honest pitch is that the game is exactly as deep as a grid of buttons can be, which is a ceiling some players will hit within an evening and others will respect for years.

Playing it today

Live and free at minmaxia.com/basic, still on version 9, still maintained by MinMaxia, with no install, account or payment anywhere near it. It runs in any browser, and its sequel awaits anyone who actually clears the grid.

The verdict

A pure-number minimalist with a cult following and a sequel: the genre's skeleton with all of the paint stripped off, made by someone who clearly understood what the paint was hiding. If Cookie Clicker's grandmas feel like too much production design, BASIC is the same pleasure at its most naked. It is not for everyone, and it was never trying to be.
