Campaign Clicker

Pick a side, click for votes, win the 2016 election. Springloaded's political time capsule.

by Springloaded · 5 October 2016 · Steam / iOS / Android

Campaign Clicker is a political idle game that is also a time capsule: pick Democrat or Republican, click for votes, hire campaign staff, and win the 2016 election, complete with real debate quotes from that endlessly quotable year. Springloaded released it free on Steam and mobile in October 2016, one month before the actual election, and claimed over a million players before the votes were counted.

What the loop feels like

You click for votes, the votes fund staffers, and the staffers click for you. The automation loop and the campaign trail map onto each other so neatly it is a wonder the genre had waited this long for the joke. That's Campaign Clicker.

States flip, debate quotes fire across the screen, and the electoral college becomes a progress bar. The satire is exactly as broad and exactly as mean as the year it was made in, which is why it works. That's Campaign Clicker.

The systems doing the work

The documented systems are active clicking for votes, staff hiring as the automation layer, and the state-by-state election structure as the progression spine. The campaign runs on real 2016 material, quotes and all, and the whole machine is built to resolve on election night, whether or not you have finished clicking. Free was the price on every platform it shipped to.

Where it stumbles

It has not been updated since release, which is correct: the game is about that election, forever, and it froze when the campaign did. Players arriving years later get a document rather than a service, the humor is aimed at a specific news cycle, and the mobile versions carry the era's usual friction. If 2016 satire sounds exhausting rather than funny, it will be.

Playing it today

Still free and live on Steam, with the official site also still up, frozen in 2016. This entry's media set is unusually rich: the full Steam art pack plus a stack of official site assets, all verified. Political satire idlers are rare enough that this one has no real neighbour in the catalogue.

The verdict

A surprisingly substantive political clicker and a genuinely funny time capsule of 2016. The satire has aged into history, which is either a problem or the whole point, depending on how you vote.
