Choppin' Wood
Chop wood, pump oil, hire a logging helicopter: an early Cookie Clicker descendant, saved by its community.
by skarless · 2013 · Web (defunct, community mirror live)
Choppin' Wood is an early Cookie Clicker descendant from 2013: chop wood by hand, hire a lumberjack, escalate through logging trucks and helicopters to oil rigs, and eventually an oil dictator, because the genre's escalation was always absurd and this one leaned in. Its original site is dead, but this is a rescue story, not an obituary.
What the loop feels like
You chop a tree, wood piles up, and wood hires a lumberjack. The lumberjack chops while you chop, which is the whole automation revelation of 2013 in one hire. That's Choppin' Wood.
Trucks replace axes, helicopters replace trucks, and the oil half of the game starts buying its own escalating workforce, all the way up the absurdity curve to the dictator at the top. The escalation is the joke and the pacing is genuinely well-judged for its era. That's Choppin' Wood.

The systems doing the work
The documented systems are the era-standard trio, active clicking, idle progression and automation, stretched across two resource lines: timber first, then oil, each with its own workforce ladder. The recovery is part of the story: a community re-host recovered the game and serves the original site's actual artwork, which is how this entry carries a full set of verified asset images from the lumberjack to the dictator's rig. r/choppinwood organised the recovery, which is the kind of preservation the genre does best without anyone asking.

Where it stumbles
It is 2013 design, happily unmodernised: the balance curve is short by contemporary standards, the endgame arrives before the fatigue does, and there is nothing here for players weaned on multi-layer prestige. The mirror also lives on community goodwill rather than an official channel, so its long-term availability depends on hobbyists, as it always has.
Playing it today
The community mirror is live and playable, and the original site archive preserves the original site. Either door works; the mirror is the one that plays.
The verdict
An early genre artifact with its complete original art intact and a community that refused to let it die. Historically charming, still playable, and the escalation curve from axe to dictator remains very funny.
