Zone residential, commercial and industrial tiles: a SimCity-flavoured text incremental.

by johntoopublic · 2014 · Web

CityClicker is johntoopublic's 2014 SimCity-flavoured text incremental: zone residential, commercial and industrial tiles, set tax rates, build roads, schools, billboards and a power plant, and watch your city's clock and newspaper tick through the consequences.

What the loop feels like

You zone a tile, residents move in, and their taxes fund the next zone. The city-management verbs translate to clicker verbs almost without loss: zoning is buying, taxes are income, and the clock keeps the city breathing between visits. That's CityClicker.

Industry feeds commerce feeds population, and the newspaper, The City Times, reports your policies back to you in the driest possible prose. It is the best-written part of the game, which is saying something for a text incremental. That's CityClicker.

The systems doing the work

The named systems are idle progression, automation and a resource economy, but the zoning layer is what distinguishes it: RCI balance, tax-rate levers and civic buildings give the economy a shape most 2014 clickers never attempted. The systems work, the interlocks are real, and the SimCity lineage is worn openly.

Where it stumbles

It remains an alpha, and it plays like one: the polish never arrived, the endgame is unfinished, and the directory audience that found it rated it as promising rather than polished. There is no real finish to reach, and the balance wobbles once the city scales past its early-game comfort zone.

Playing it today

Free and live at GitHub Pages, verified in this rewrite, with the source open on GitHub, which is fitting for an alpha this honest about being one. If the city-builder itch survives the alpha edges, the catalogue's fuller management idlers are the next stop.

The verdict

A promising alpha from the genre's city-builder wing: real systems, no finish, and a newspaper that deserves its own game. One to poke at, not to finish.
