City of Sacrifice

A dark, sparse text incremental about managing a city and sacrificing its citizens.

by unknown · c. 2013-2014 · Web (defunct)

City of Sacrifice is a dark, sparse text incremental from the wave of games that followed A Dark Room: manage a city, and when the numbers demand it, sacrifice the citizens keeping it alive. It circulated via the genre wiki and the Almost Idle directory around 2013 to 2014, developer uncredited then and uncredited now.

What the loop feels like

The documented shape is a city management loop with a resource economy and a moral trapdoor: you grow the city, the city consumes, and the consumption eventually outruns the growth. That's City of Sacrifice.

Then the title becomes an instruction. When the numbers demand it, the citizens keeping the city alive are the resource the city consumes, and the game wears that arrangement with the same flat prose its ancestors used for fires and ruins. That's City of Sacrifice.

The systems doing the work

Honesty first: this is one of the thinnest records in the catalogue. The documented systems are idle progression and a resource economy; the sacrifice mechanic is the game's premise and its namesake, but the exact rules of when and how it triggers are not recoverable from the sources that survive. The archive snapshot preserved the game page with its menu and slot UI, and beyond that structure we will not invent detail.

Where it stumbles

The record itself is the problem, and it is a cluster of gaps: the developer is unknown, the live site returns an origin error and may be simply unreachable rather than dead, the archive capture holds no imagery because the interface was menu-only, and no gameplay video exists. Whatever strategic depth the sacrifice loop had is currently inaccessible to history.

Playing it today

Maybe. The August 2025 Wayback snapshot preserved the game page, and whether it plays fully from the archive depends on its scripts, which the minimal capture makes hard to confirm. A note on the error code: the site died recently enough that it may come back, and this entry will say so if it does. For the fuller version of this mood, A Dark Room is the game this one followed.

The verdict

A historical entry from the genre's bleakest subgenre: dark, sparse, and now mostly dark in the other sense. The archive holds the door open.
