Clicking FF7
Final Fantasy 7 as a clicker: attack through encounters, level Cloud, buy materia, break LIMIT.
by Menencia · 2013 · Web
Clicking FF7 takes Final Fantasy 7's combat loop and rebuilds it as an active clicker: you click to attack through random encounters and bosses, level Cloud and Barret with FF7-style HP, MP, LIMIT and EXP systems, and buy materia and Potions with Gil. Menencia released the original in 2013 as a Cookie Clicker-inspired fan project, and the zone progression follows the game's arc, starting at Sector 1 Reactor.
What the loop feels like
You click, the attack lands, and the encounter fades into Gil and experience. Materia slots fill, LIMIT bars charge, and the next boss waits at the end of the zone with the same dramatic timing the original taught everyone. That's Clicking FF7.
Deeper into the arc, the systems take over: MP management matters, Potions matter, and the leveling rhythm of the source game survives the translation to clicks almost intact. That's Clicking FF7.

The systems doing the work
The named systems are active clicking as the attack verb, idle progression through character levels, and the FF7 economy: Gil as currency, materia as upgrades, Potions as consumables, and the LIMIT gauge as the manual burst button. The rewrite is what makes the entry interesting: the original was rebuilt as an actively maintained Angular application with commits into 2026, a Firebase backend, and Crowdin localisation support, which makes it one of the few early fan idle games to receive a genuine technical overhaul rather than abandonment.

Where it stumbles
It is a fan work with a fan work's scope: the progression follows the source game's outline rather than deepening it, the strategy layer is thin beyond loadout choices, and players with no affection for the source material will find the click-to-attack loop bare. Community feedback shaped it, with the ATB-charge-on-click mechanic coming directly from the incremental games community, and the developer iterated, but the ceiling stayed where the license put it.
Playing it today
Free in the browser at the official site, with the source open on GitHub and the rewrite verified live. If you have any affection for FF7 and any tolerance for clicking, this is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon, and one of the better-preserved fan clickers of its generation.
The verdict
A loving, technically revived fan clicker that turns FF7's first hours into taps. It does exactly what the premise promises, and the rewrite means it still runs, which is the rarest mechanic of all in this corner of the genre.
