Croakoloco
A relaxing frog-collecting idle where you buy packs, feed flies, breed rarities, and occasionally possess a frog to hunt golden flies yourself. Very Positive.
by Ryan Forrester · 2024 · Steam
Croakoloco is what happens when someone looks at Chillquarium's fish tanks and thinks: what if frogs. Ryan Forrester's solo project landed on Steam in May 2024 and settled at a Very Positive verdict, and the premise is exactly as advertised: buy frog packs, watch tadpoles grow into adults, feed them flies, and build a terrarium that hums along in the background of your workday. It is a desktop companion first and an economy second, and Rock Paper Shotgun's take, that simply being around frogs is a powerfully worthwhile activity, is the review in miniature.
What the loop feels like
You buy a pack, a new frog appears, it croaks and eats a fly. That's Croakoloco.
You spawn flies, the frogs fatten up, and the adults start burping out income on their own. That's Croakoloco.
You possess your favourite frog, leap around the tank, and snatch a golden fly worth a fortune. That's Croakoloco.

Bonuses, breeding and the shiny chase
The systems stack neatly. Feeding and Growth is the base: spawning flies accelerates tadpoles into adulthood and maximizes their sell value. Adult frogs roll random bonuses, and these rolls genuinely shape your build, frogs with high golden-fly value for active players, or high burp-chance frogs that automate fly spawning for idle ones, with pricier packs carrying better odds. The Breeding System lets mature frogs mate and produce offspring that inherit the parents' highest rarity and one of their bonuses, sometimes amplified, which turns your tank into a slow generational project. Froggy Mode is the active hook, direct control of one frog in the 3D environment to hunt golden flies that only appear there. Layer shiny hunting on top, epic-quality variants of every species, and a prestige loop that pays out faster money and higher-quality frogs once the collection is complete, and the terrarium has a surprising amount of runway.

Where it stumbles
The loop is intentionally shallow, and if the frog novelty misses you there is not much underneath. Pack RNG means the collection chase can stall, with dupes dominating stretches of the mid-game. Deep incremental players will find the prestige layer light, the numbers are cozy-sized rather than exponential. And the very thing that makes it charming, that it mostly runs itself in a corner of your screen, means sessions can blur into checking in once an hour. The community frames all of this as the point rather than a flaw, but it is worth knowing you are buying an amphibian screensaver with real systems inside it.

The verdict
The best kind of cozy idle: one clear idea, executed with charm, that asks for minutes a day and repays hours of background company. The Froggy Mode hook and breeding math give it just enough depth to outlast its novelty. For the aquarium ancestor of the formula, check Chillquarium, and for another low-stakes collect-a-thon Pomofarm swaps frogs for focus timers.
