Desktop Farm Remastered
The interactive voxel wallpaper grew up into a real game: build a tiny farm, let it tick, watch it bloom.

Some developers make a live wallpaper, then get told by their community to make a real game. That is the origin story of Desktop Farm Remastered: 3dm_live_wallpapers' November 2022 rebuild of their bestseller Desktop Farm, freed from wallpaper limitations with replaced graphics and the freedom to run as a normal window while your crops and cows do the earning.
It is an ultra-casual voxel farm sim in the desktop-companion school: low stakes, real-time ticks, and a diorama that quietly densifies at the bottom edge of your attention.
What the loop feels like
You start with a bare plot and place things onto it: crop plots, trees, structures, animals, all in bright voxel miniature. Crops grow and animals produce over real-time intervals, so revenue ticks up while you do something else entirely. Between checks you clear obstacles, carve out space, and buy the next patch of land. That's Desktop Farm Remastered.
A day later the diorama has filled in. Harvests became cash, cash became a new field and two more sheep, and the farm has kept producing through every meeting and compile in between. Nothing ever demands you. That's Desktop Farm Remastered.

The systems doing the work
Voxel building and placement is the hands-on layer: plots, trees, structures and animals arranged piece by piece across manually managed space. The passive economy is the earning layer, generating revenue over real-time intervals whether the window is focused or not. The expansion loop reinvests harvest and animal yields into more land area, new seed types, decorative elements and livestock, and the unlock chain parcels out new crops and animals as the farm grows.
It is a shallow pond by design, and the pleasant surprise is how well the pieces cooperate: space pressure gives the placement layer actual decisions, and the realtime economy means every logout is technically profitable.

Where it stumbles
The technical reports on the Steam community hub are the reason the rating sits at Mixed: progress-wiping bugs where restarting the game occasionally resets saved data, forced fullscreen behaviour on launch rather than seamless backgrounding, and interaction bugs where tools fail on trees or sheep render tiny and vanish at random. Depth is the structural limit, with players describing it as closer to an interactive voxel sandbox than a true progressing idle. Next to Rusty's Retirement and its polished bottom-of-the-screen cousins, the seams show.
Playing it today
Desktop Farm Remastered is on Steam for Windows, released November 2022. No mobile release surfaced in our platform check. If the desk-farm itch survives, neighbours in this catalogue include My Taskbar Farm, Micro Macro Farm and Rusty's Retirement for the modern standard.
The verdict
A charming voxel desk-toy farm undermined by save-wiping bugs and shallow progression. Pleasant at its low price as ambient decoration with a light game attached, but save often and keep expectations at screensaver height.
