Fish Tycoon Lite
The free tryout tank for the classic real-time breeding sim: same clock, same genetics, smaller pond.
by LDW Software, LLC · 12 Dec 2008 · iOS
Fish Tycoon Lite is the free on-ramp to Fish Tycoon, Last Day of Work's 2008 real-time breeding sim, and it carries the whole DNA of the original in a deliberately constrained tank: cross-breed fish, discover species, price and sell adults in your store, and chase the seven magic fish, all on a clock that never stops running. As a trial it works. As a complete game it has a ceiling, and players should know where it is before they fall in love.
What the loop feels like
You drag one fish into the isolation tank with another; there is no gender system, only fin types and body types that combine into specific species. The tank runs in real time even when the app is closed, so fish grow, hunger, sicken and die on the world's schedule, not yours. That's Fish Tycoon Lite.
Adults go to the sale tank, you set price tags based on rarity and appeal, and the proceeds buy research into environment durability, food quality and healing. The survival math is the real game: fragile high-tier cross-breeds die quickly if your environment research has not kept up, so the disciplined loop is breed, grow, sell, reinvest in environment tech, then attempt rarer combinations. Rushing the magic fish early is the classic beginner disaster. That's Fish Tycoon Lite.

The systems doing the work
The named systems are breeding and genetics, fin and body types combining into species, the seven Magic Fish of Isola as the endgame puzzle; the real-time simulation that never pauses, even offline; the shop economy, where you manually price adult fish against rarity, demand and appeal; and the research lab, improving environment durability, food quality and healing technology. Veteran advice is specific and hard-won: breed hardy low-tier species early for steady income, feed right before closing and immediately on reopening to prevent starvation gaps, sell a sick cheap fish while it is still alive rather than wasting funds on medicine, and put every spare coin into environment and food research instead of cosmetic tank decorations.
Where it stumbles
Everything the original gets criticised for, the Lite version doubles. The interface is genuinely dated: muddy low-resolution scaling on modern screens makes even diagnosing a sick fish hard. The real-time clock is merciless, and returning after a day away historically meant a tank of casualties. The economy is counter-intuitive, since decorations and cosmetic upgrades do nothing to keep rare fry alive. And most importantly, the Lite wall is real: progression gates arrive early and the full magic-fish quest effectively requires the paid version, which is the point of a demo but still worth saying out loud.
Playing it today
It is free on the App Store from LDW Software, the creators of the Virtual Villagers series, with no other platforms verified. Treat it as an extended demo: enough real-time breeding to learn the systems, not enough to finish the quest. The complete experience lives in Fish Tycoon, and the modernised take is Fish Tycoon 2: Virtual Aquarium.
The verdict
Fish Tycoon Lite is a faithful, frustrating window into a foundational breeding sim: genuinely addictive genetics and store economics, wrapped in 2008 presentation and a paywall-shaped finish line. Try it for free, then decide which version deserves your hours.
