Fortress Clicker

A Dwarf Fortress-inspired dwarf-labor idle that never left alpha, archived whole.

by u/BallC420 · 2014 · Web (defunct)

Fortress Clicker is a Dwarf-Fortress-inspired AngularJS idle from 2014, and it never left version 0.1. What survives is a colony-sim in miniature: dwarves with labor preferences, a jobs system, buildings, resources, and an in-game calendar ticking over the whole fortress, all built by a developer known on Reddit as u/BallC420 and hosted on a domain that no longer resolves.

What it was

The documented systems sketch the loop plainly. You assign dwarves to professions and labors, and the fortress produces accordingly. A jobs system manages the work queue, resources flow between stockpiles and buildings, and the in-game calendar paces it all, season by season. The resource icons that survive in the archive tell their own small story: beer, bread, logs, and wheat both planted and harvestable, a fortress economy rendered in 128-pixel squares. That's Fortress Clicker as it existed: a management layer stripped to its studs, alpha in the literal sense.

Playing it today

The original site, fortressclicker.tropicosoftware.com, is dead, with DNS resolution failing outright as of this entry's verification pass. What makes the entry unusual is the archival: the Internet Archive holds full HTML, JavaScript and CSS snapshots from 2014 through late 2016, and the game's resource icons were archived alongside them. You can visit the archived game on the Wayback Machine, where portions of it may run under modern browser emulation, though an AngularJS alpha from 2014 makes no promises. This catalog's neighbors Dinogotchi and Farm and Mine show what survived and grew.

The verdict

A historical alpha with unusually complete archival, which is rare for a dead browser game. As a playable experience it is a fragment; as a document of the era when one developer could ship a Dwarf-Fortress homage as a weekend-grade web toy, it is a genuinely well-preserved one.
