Now Open! Horror House
Play the haunted house, not the victim: place scares along the route, drain visitor courage, and run the gift shop.

Tower defense usually casts you as the town. Now Open! Horror House casts you as the monster closet: a haunted attraction entrepreneur whose job is designing, upgrading and expanding a house of horrors scary enough to flatten every thrill-seeker who buys a ticket. 揭不开锅's February 2024 micro-indie blends simulation management with tower defense logic and a gift shop.

What the loop feels like
Visitors arrive with their own courage, patience and wallets, and walk your route like invaders walking a lane. Your scare mechanisms, props and animatronics sit in wait with their fear output, cooldowns and trigger radii, chipping mental fortitude as each group passes. Courage hits zero, the visitor flees in terror, defense holds. They walk through unfazed, they conquer your house and your reputation pays for it. That's Now Open! Horror House.
Between waves comes the business half: tune ticket pricing, package deals and special events, stock the souvenir shop, and reinvest the takings into bigger floor plans, deeper room layouts and higher-tier supernatural props. That's the tycoon layer.
The named systems doing the work
Scare trap placement is the tower defense core, read against each visitor's baseline courage. The visitor management system tracks courage, patience and money, and rewards or penalizes reputation by outcome. The micro-economy of tickets, packages, events and merchandise balances revenue against operational scaling, venue expansion unlocks larger layouts, trap upgrades deepen the arsenal, and a scaling difficulty curve sends tougher, more resilient visitors as your name grows.
Where it stumbles
The early consensus from a tiny review pool flags progression as superficial: as traps level up, damage and cooldown changes can feel like reskins rather than mechanical evolution. Late game tips into micro-management, with enemy health pools scaling so drastically that play becomes frantic, repetitive pausing. And on larger maps, visibility is the structural flaw: when visitor volume spikes, low-health guests slip past easily because the interface lacks proper tools to track them. At its micro price with a Mixed rating from a handful of reviews, the honest read is a fun afternoon concept that runs out of tuning before it runs out of ideas.
Playing it today
Now Open! Horror House is on Steam for Windows, released February 2024 (A$ 2.95 at our check). No mobile release surfaced in our platform check. If running the monster's side of the horror appeals, the catalogue's Scream Collector and Destroy the Demon Army take the villain's chair too.
The verdict
A clever genre inversion, haunted house as lane defense with a business sim bolted on, delivered at pocket-change price with balance and visibility problems in the back half. Buy it for the premise and an evening of jump-scare logistics; expect the late game to fray.
