Portable Farm

A free SteamVR idle farm that lives inside a floating portal while you play other VR games.

by Bar Shift Games · 2 Nov, 2020 · SteamVR (Windows)

Somewhere in the strange attic of Steam there is a free VR game that is really a window. You pin a floating portal inside whatever VR world you are in, reach your controllers through the frame, and farm a tiny 3D plot while your main game loads, downloads, or quietly ignores you. That is Portable Farm, Bar Shift Games' November 2020 SteamVR experiment, and it remains the only incremental in the catalog where the farm lives literally inside another game.

What the loop feels like

You are waiting for a match to start, so you glance into the portal parked at the edge of your vision, reach in, and pull up a row of carrots with one grip of the controller. The soil gets another seed, the watering can does its round, and the match lobby is already calling you back. That's Portable Farm.

You come back tomorrow and the farm has kept living without you: time passes continuously, the season has turned at the start of the calendar month, and a new crop is available that was not there before. The farm is a calendar you can tend. That's Portable Farm.

Systems, small but real

The Portal Window is the whole conceit: a 2D frame into a separate 3D space you can reposition and resize anywhere in VR, with a unique gesture to open and close it on the fly. The Basic Farming Cycle is till, plant, water and harvest, all driven by a single configurable grip button, the right amount of friction for a side activity. Fertilizer and clover keep the soil fast and moist, and passive growing means crops ripen whether you are looking or not. Harvests earn currency for Automation & Upgrades that make the farm more profitable and less needy, plus cosmetic decorations that dress the miniature plot. Dynamic Seasons rotate at the start of each month, changing the landscape and the available crops.

Where it stumbles

Players who arrived expecting a farming sim found a toy, and the community is honest that it plateaus once the main cosmetics and crop tiers are unlocked; content updates have long since slowed to a trickle. As an older overlay utility it can also cause performance hiccups or demand window fiddling depending on the host game, and the store itself warns about CPU bottlenecking and recommends trying the demo first to see if your system can run both at once. For desktop-window farming without the headset, Garden Galaxy and Desktopia: A Desktop Village Simulator take the same idea indoors.

Playing it today

Free on Steam, requiring SteamVR and a headset; there is no flat or mobile version. Reception among VR owners skews positive, with the portal mechanic and the free price doing most of the charming.

The verdict

A delightful free oddity and a genuine genre mutation: an idle game with a physical body. Worth five minutes of any VR owner's time, which is roughly what it asks.
