Tap Titans
Tap the titan, level the Sword Master, prestige the clan: the mobile clicker that made idle mainstream.
by Game Hive Corporation · 2015 · iOS / Android
Tap Titans is Game Hive's 2015 mobile clicker, and it is not an overstatement to call it the game that put the idle genre on every phone home screen. The premise is one gesture: tap the titan, the titan dies, its gold hires heroes, and the heroes keep killing while your thumb recovers. Launched free on iOS and Android, it became one of the defining clickers of the app-store era and spawned Tap Titans 2, which Game Hive still maintains with clans, raids, pets and tournaments a decade later.
The original's historical weight is the reason it stays indexed here. Alongside a handful of same-era giants, Tap Titans carried tapping games from forum curiosities to the top of the app charts, and its template, monster walls, hero rosters, artifact prestige, became the shape of the genre for years.
What the loop feels like
You tap a titan, the titan drops gold, and the gold hires heroes who tap for you. The first wall appears, the heroes carry you through it, and the next thirty titans fall in a blur of numbers. That's Tap Titans.
Prestige turns the run into relics, relics become artifacts, and artifacts turn yesterday's wall into a warm-up. Then the next wall arrives right on schedule, a little taller and perfectly priced. That's Tap Titans.

How it actually works
Three documented systems carry the design. The hero army is the automation layer: dozens of hired heroes contribute damage per second, scaling into the millions while you watch or wander off. Artifact prestige is the meta layer: resetting a stalled run converts progress into relics, and relics buy permanent account-wide artifacts that compound every future run. And the titan ladder is the pacing spine: bosses with thirty-second timers gate progress, creating the game's signature rhythm of sprint, wall, reset. Free-to-play scaffolding wraps all of it, with the era's standard diamond currency and boost timers nudging at your wallet in the gaps.
Where it stumbles
Age shows most where the game cannot be patched. The original has been superseded by its own sequel, which added clans, raids, pets, tournaments and a decade of balance passes, leaving the first game feeling like a museum piece with a smaller Social layer and a harsher free-to-play squeeze. The walls are also tuned to test patience at exact intervals, and the diamond economy was designed when that was simply how mobile worked. New players should calibrate accordingly: this is the landmark, the sequel is the living game.
Playing it today
Free on iOS and Android, with Tap Titans 2 available from the same developer for the maintained experience. For the genre's other landmarks, Clicker Heroes is the desktop-era sibling, and Tap Tap Infinity is the same year's 3D experiment.
The verdict
A genre landmark: the clicker that carried idle games from forums to the top of the app charts, still playable at the source. Tap Titans is where the modern tap RPG learned its rhythm, and the sequel is where it grew up.
