Typing Incremental

Type the most common words in English for money, buy rarer words, prestige the dictionary. Free, and it will genuinely improve your WPM.

by ooblies · 20 Aug, 2021 · Steam (Windows)

Typing Incremental replaces the clicker's mouse with the one peripheral every incremental player already owns and underuses. ooblies released it free on Steam in August 2021 with a single question: what if your income was your typing speed? Type the top 1,000 words of the English language, then the top 10,000, earn money per word, buy your way into new vocabulary, and prestige the whole dictionary when the grind slows.

What the loop feels like

You type the, and, for, it, and a counter pays out per correct word. That's Typing Incremental.

You buy the next tier of vocabulary, the words get longer, and your rhythm becomes the economy. That's Typing Incremental.

A mistype locks the string, you feel the income stall, and you slow down for accuracy without being told to. That's Typing Incremental: a typing tutor that happens to be an incremental, and an incremental that happens to teach touch-typing.

The mechanics under the keyboard

Three systems define it. The lexicon ladder structures all progression: word lists sorted by English frequency, from the 1,000 most common up past 10,000, with later tiers paying more for longer and rarer inputs. The income engine ties cash directly to words per minute and accuracy, with mistyping creating a micro-punishment loop that stalls your input string, which means income-per-minute rewards clean rhythm over raw hammering. And the prestige loop resets cash and unlocked word tiers in exchange for prestige points, spent on permanent multipliers and convenience perks that make the familiar early lists melt on the next run.

The community's strategy advice doubles as typing advice: lock accuracy near perfect before chasing speed, treat the early frequency-sorted tiers as muscle-memory warm-up for common trigrams and prefixes, and do not linger on a finished tier watching the counter tick when the word unlocks have slowed to a crawl, that is the prestige signal.

Where it stumbles

It is extremely bare-bones. Typing isolated, decontextualized words gets monotonous fast compared to sentences or stories, there is no deep meta-progression, no Steam achievements, and the presentation is dated. The early game's manual picking of starting letters and word groups feels clunky rather than strategic. The community verdict is consistent: as a rich game you will bounce off it quickly, as a free second-monitor typing warm-up with numbers attached, it does exactly what it claims. Against dedicated tutors like Monkeytype it loses on stats and variety, but nothing else turns your WPM into an economy.

The verdict

A niche curiosity executed honestly: real skill transfer in a genre that usually teaches only spreadsheet literacy. Worth an evening of anyone's time at zero dollars, essential to no one. For a wordier idle loop, Word Clicker and qewasd approach the keyboard from the other direction.
