Word Clicker
You wake up with a burning desire to click words: Tiffany Zhang's pure-CSS word clicker.
by Tiffany Zhang (tiffzhang) · 2016 · Web (tiffzhang.com)
Word Clicker is Tiffany Zhang's text clicker, complete per the r/incremental_games Ultimate List, whose opening line does the selling: You wake up with a burning desire to click words. Click for Words, buy Cursors at ten Words apiece for Words per second, and watch the game's own text accumulate in the middle panel as you play. It is a 2016 browser toy that never got art, never needed it, and still runs at its original address.
What the loop feels like
You click a word, the word buys a cursor, and the cursor clicks words. That's Word Clicker.
The middle panel is the twist: the game's text accumulates as you play, so the playthrough leaves a document behind, a running manuscript of your own clicking. The economy is Cookie Clicker's opening chapter in prose form, cursors multiplying words per second while the words pile up semantically as well as numerically. That's Word Clicker, the genre's autobibliography.
The design thesis
Tiffany Zhang built it in 2016 as one of her small web experiments, and it circulated through the community's census rather than any press: the Ultimate List entry credits u/shadowfiles as the submitter, the standard route by which browser toys of this size entered the canon. There is no store page, no changelog, no monetization and no ending to chase, which makes it one of the purest artifacts in this catalog: a person, an idea, a stylesheet, and a domain that never lapsed. The Cookies in the URL are its own small joke, a wink at the genre's founding document hidden in the address bar.
Everything about the game is text, verified down to the byte. The research pass confirmed the page renders as a jQuery clicker with a title-match and Cursors priced at ten Words, and the imagery hunt is complete by verified absence: no og:image, no img tags, no favicon, the probe 404s, and zero url() references anywhere in the CSS. The game's own stylesheet is the single asset preserved here, sha256-sidecarred like a museum piece, because for a game made of language the stylesheet is the brushwork. In a genre that measures itself in achievements and pixel economies, a clicker that is literally only words is both a joke and a boundary marker: this is where the idle genre touches the literary avant-garde, and it fits in a browser tab.
Playing it today
Free at the official page, live at its original address a decade on, which puts it ahead of most of its 2016 web-idle cohort. The catalog entry identifies it via the Ultimate List wiki, the community's long-standing census, credited there to u/shadowfiles. For the genre's wordsmith cousins, Typing Incremental makes your keyboard the clicker, and Cookie Clicker remains the ur-text this one riffs on.
The verdict
A text-purist's clicker with a perfect opening line: the genre's wordiest confession, still clicking. Wake up, desire words, click them, and read what you did.
