Universe Horizon

Pilot a tiny ship away from Earth forever: speed upgrades, energy budgets and prestige loops, ending somewhere beyond the edge of the observable universe.

by Jarkem · 11 Jan, 2025 · Steam (Windows / Linux)

Universe Horizon gives you a small, slow, trustworthy spaceship and a single instruction: get as far from Earth as possible. Solo developer Jarkem released it on Steam in January 2025, and unlike most incremental games that quietly drift forever, this one has a destination. The first baby step is escaping the Solar System. The last one is, remarkably, establishing a peaceful home outside the observable universe.

Universe Horizon gameplay

What the loop feels like

You click for silicon, buy a thruster, and watch the odometer crawl past the Moon. That's Universe Horizon.

The auto-collectors come online, the clicking stops mattering, and distance starts accumulating in units with too many zeroes. That's Universe Horizon.

Then an energy deficit flags you, your speed collapses, and you learn the game's one hard law. That's Universe Horizon: a journey with a direction, where the map itself is the progress bar.

The energy budget is the game

The central system is the energy threshold. Letting current energy drop below optimal incurs steep speed penalties, so propulsion upgrades must always be backed by power generation upgrades like energy amps. Every veteran strategy starts with the same rule: never over-upgrade engine speed without the generation to feed it.

Around that core sit the named systems. Distance milestones, from 10,000 kilometres to the Moon to beyond the observable universe, unlock each new tab, and every major milestone adds a button leading to its own specialized upgrade set. The Engineer tech tree converts harvested resources (silicon, energy, aluminium, hydrogen and tachons) into hull upgrades, thrusters and automation. Challenges grant boosts for overcoming constraints, skill trees branch by need, and optional mini-games serve players who prefer active sessions. The prestige layer runs on Prestigium, resetting for permanent boosts toward an endgame private space island, and the community consensus is to automate early (silicon auto-collection lands around the 400 km milestone) and to manage hydrogen and aluminium bottlenecks rather than dumping everything into raw speed.

Universe Horizon upgrade tabs

Where it stumbles

The interface is the loudest complaint: as the sixteen-plus tabs arrive, navigating them gets cluttered and hard to track. Mid-to-late game resource walls, particularly around hydrogen and the prestige bottlenecks, stall momentum and demand micromanagement or grinding before the next acceleration tier. And the back stretch leans on prestige looping right before the finale, which loses some novelty exactly when the game needs it most. The counterweight is that players actually finish this one, with a completion rate unusually high for the genre and a runtime of roughly fifty to a hundred and twenty-five hours depending on idle patience.

Playing it today

Live on Steam for Windows and Linux at a very low price, with achievements, cloud saves and offline progress. No mobile version from the same developer is verified.

The verdict

A rare thing in the genre: an incremental with an ending, a sense of direction, and visual changes that recontextualize your place in the cosmos as you go. It respects offline progress, has a clear arc, and does not stretch itself into infinity. If you want a deeper systems sandbox after this one, Unnamed Space Idle and Space Company are the natural next stops.
