Zavod

A Soviet-factory visual novel where an old worker wakes up young again on the same shift. Mostly Positive in Early Access, and the story is still waiting for its second chapter.

by Gendocik · 2025 · Steam

Zavod begins where a working life ends, or should: Dmitry Morozov, a factory worker who has given the plant his whole life, wakes up one morning young again in an alternate version of his own workplace. Gendocik's visual novel wears its Soviet industrial surrealism proudly, all melancholy corridors and strangely vibrant machinery, and it plays closer to an ambient serialized novel with light adventure elements than to a branching choice epic. It arrived on Steam in Early Access in early 2025 and holds a Mostly Positive rating, with the warmth aimed squarely at the atmosphere and the hesitation aimed at everything else.

What the loop feels like

You read a shift, the factory hums around Dmitry, and a small detail lands wrong in a way the writing refuses to explain yet. That's Zavod.

A choice lands quietly, the day ends, and the game files it away without telling you what it cost. That's Zavod.

Zavod gameplay

You reach the stopping point, look at the clock, and realize the factory has barely opened its doors. That's Zavod.

How it plays

This is an intimate, slow-paced experience, closer to ambient reading than to choice-matrix visual novels that advertise enormous route trees. The pleasure is tonal: melancholic industrial surrealism in the lineage of post-Soviet VNs like Everlasting Summer, but smaller and more personal, a single workplace seen through a man who has suddenly been given back the time it took from him. It is also, at the time of writing, a fragment. The Early Access build ships a prologue and a first episode spanning three in-game days, sold as the opening of a much longer story, and the experience is structured as serialized chapters rather than a complete arc.

Where it stumbles

The central criticism is pacing of a different kind: development. The game arrived in Early Access in early 2025 with a prologue and one episode, and progress on subsequent chapters has been slow enough that community reviews openly call the content situation stalled, with players hitting a narrative wall very quickly and finding nothing behind it. If you need complete arcs, that is a genuine problem rather than a caveat. Sentiment around the writing and art stays warm, but tempered with caution about the release schedule, and the fair reading is that you are buying a promising opening chapter, not a game that currently pays off its premise.

Playing it today

Live on Steam as an Early Access purchase, single-player, Windows. Desktop-only at check: the iOS listing named Zavod Edy is an unrelated food-factory app by a different developer, not this game.

The verdict

A quietly beautiful premise carried by atmosphere, worth following rather than necessarily worth buying today, and worth checking how many episodes exist before you click buy. If you want a factory that actually runs while you are there, the conveyor-puzzle game ZAVOD: Conveyor Logic exists under a near-identical name, though it is a different game entirely. For a complete cozy loop instead of an unfinished one, Inn Tycoon opens its doors tonight.
