Auto Turret
Buy upgrades, let the turret fire. A 2014 Unity web incremental the platform sunset took with it.
by Supercluster · 2014 · Web (Unity, defunct)
Auto Turret was a 2014 Unity web incremental on Kongregate with a pitch of perfect economy: buy upgrades and let your Auto Turret do the rest. You defended a small fortress against waves of mobs, and the turret got better at it than you ever were, which was the point.
Supercluster released it into the last good years of the Unity web player, and the wiki lists it as 2D, complete, Web (Unity): a hands-off defense incremental from the era when Unity's browser plugin let developers ship 3D-ish incrementals straight to Kongregate.
What the loop felt like
Waves arrived, the turret engaged them without your supervision, and the drops funded upgrades that made the next wave a formality. The game asked you to watch, mostly, and to spend between the watching. That's Auto Turret.
Then the defense became self-sustaining, the waves became scenery, and the fortress you were protecting mattered less than the upgrade curve feeding it. Also that's Auto Turret.
The systems, as far as the record shows
The honest inventory is short: a fortress, waves of mobs, and one automated turret whose upgrades were the entire game. An honesty note on research: our AI Mode passes could not identify this specific title and returned generic auto-turret mechanics from other games, so their output was discarded, and this entry sticks to the wiki row, the release thread, and the archived page metadata. What the icon shows, a turret firing into a glowing explosion, is both the game's key art and, honestly, its entire design document.
Where it stumbles
What killed it was not design but infrastructure. It is one of the quieter casualties of the Unity web player sunset: the Kongregate page now redirects to the site's homepage, verified in this rewrite, and the community consensus, including a 2024 wiki thread, is that no working version survives. That is the recurring tragedy of the plugin-era web: a complete, working game can simply stop existing because the substrate under it was switched off. Whatever its flaws were, nobody now gets to have opinions about them.
Playing it today
No working version exists. The 2020 Wayback snapshot preserves the page metadata, and the 2014 release thread preserves the discussion, but the game itself is gone with the plugin it ran on. There was no Steam, mobile or downloadable release to fall back on.
The verdict
A historical entry: a clean little defense idler that died with its platform. Its icon survives, its wiki row survives, the release thread remembers it fondly, and this page completes the record. Somewhere between an idle game and an argument for web standards.
