Count The Sheep

Wake up sheep, count to trillions: ErikGames' Unity sheep idle, offline since the plugin era.

by ErikGames (u/erikstudios) · 2016 · Web (Unity, defunct) / Steam (Greenlight, retired)

Somewhere in 2016, ErikGames shipped a Unity idle about the oldest counting joke there is: wake the sheep, count the sheep, and keep counting until the number stops being a number. Count The Sheep is dead now, in the way browser games from the plugin era die, but the record it left behind is unusually complete, down to a saved flock in the hundreds of trillions.

What the loop feels like

From the preserved screenshots and the page's own structured data, the shape is legible: you tap to wake sheep, automate the flock so counting continues without you, and buy into technology upgrades that push the tally from thousands to millions to a save file showing five hundred and seventy-nine trillion sheep and still climbing. That's Count The Sheep.

The Wake Up hook was the character of the thing, the small flourish that made a sheep counter feel like more than a spreadsheet, and it is the detail players took away from it. Beyond that the record goes quiet: the counter climbed into scientific notation, the technologies stacked, and the flock grew. That's Count The Sheep.

The systems doing the work

What can be verified is a standard Unity-web era structure: manual waking for early income, automated flock production, and a technology ladder as the long-game sink. Nothing more exotic is documented, and honesty matters more here than padding, because this is a historical entry first and a recommendation second.

Where it stumbles

Even in its day it was a modest counter, the kind of game a lunch break could see a good stretch of, and its ambitions stopped at making one number very large. The biggest flaw is terminal: the game does not run. The wiki row marks it dead, the Kongregate page survives as a shell, and the Steam Greenlight campaign died with Greenlight itself in 2017. Even at its best it was a straightforward counter with modest depth, and the Unity browser plugin era it belonged to has been switched off underneath it. What stumbles now is not the design but the corpse.

Playing it today

It is not playable. The Kongregate listing remains online as a record rather than a door, the Greenlight page returns an error, and no archive build is verified. What survives is visual: four gameplay screenshots preserved from the page's JSON-LD data, including that five-hundred-seventy-nine-trillion-sheep save, and a small technical footnote, the Kong CDN files were jpg-named PNGs, renamed here to match what they actually are. If you want living games from the same web-idle tradition, Anti-Idle: The Game and Progress Quest are the era's survivors.

The verdict

Count The Sheep is a historical entry: a Unity-era idle with real screenshots, a real death date, and one warm idea, waking sheep, that lifted it above the average counter. The sheep are counted. The count is final.
