Cavernous II

Clone yourself, loop the cave, finish the run: a time-loop puzzle incremental, finished and open.

by Nucaranlaeg · 2023 · Web

Cavernous II is a time-loop cave puzzle by Nucaranlaeg: each run through the cave, you act; at the end, your clone repeats those actions while you act differently; and the puzzle of the game is orchestrating a cave full of your own past selves. It is the Idle Loops formula applied to a 2D map, done cleanly, and it is finished: development is complete, the code is open, and the game is free.

What the loop feels like

You mine a wall, the loop resets, and your clone mines it again while you do something new. Every trip through the cave is a draft of a schedule, and the game keeps asking whether this draft is the one that finally fits. That's Cavernous II.

Clones accumulate, the cave fills with parallel versions of your own plans, and optimising the schedule becomes the whole game. The pleasure is unusual for the genre: not numbers growing, but a plan finally clicking into place. That's Cavernous II.

The systems doing the work

The named systems are idle progression, automation and prestige, all expressed through the clone mechanic: your past selves are the automation, repetition is the resource, and the prestige layer restructures what a single loop can accomplish. It respects your brain in a way few incrementals attempt, and the cave-puzzle framing gives every efficiency gain a spatial answer rather than a menu one.

Where it stumbles

The format is demanding. Schedule-puzzles stall hard when a plan refuses to fit, and players who want the genre's ambient background-numbers comfort will find this one insists on attention instead. Presentation is programmer-art minimal, and finished means no more updates: what shipped is what ships.

Playing it today

Free at the official GitHub Pages home and on galaxy.click, both verified live, with the source open on GitHub. The galaxy.click thumbnail is the official art, a cave with CAVERNOUS carved across it, which is accurate. If the schedule-loop itch strikes again, the catalogue's time-loop relatives make good company.

The verdict

A complete, open-source time-loop puzzle that respects your brain: the clone mechanic is one of the genre's genuinely clever automation metaphors. Play it before its sequel of ideas gets made by someone with less taste.
