Grim Clicker

A grim, occult RPG wearing a clicker's clothes

by EvilCharm Games · 30 Jan, 2024 · Steam (Windows)

Let us get the misnomer out of the way first: Grim Clicker is not really an idle game. The community's most repeated complaint is that people arrive expecting cookie clicker-style passive numbers and find instead an active, hands-on RPG with skill trees, equipment disassembly and a prestige ladder several storeys tall. Your hero is immortal and can fight on his own, but the players who get anywhere manage the general trend closely. Go in expecting to work, and the game is generous. Go in expecting to nap, and it is a wall.

Free on Steam, developed by EvilCharm Games, and openly inspired by Diablo, Grim Dawn and Dark Souls, which explains both the tone and the appetite for complexity.

What the loop feels like

You click, your hero fights, and energy drains, so you park him by a bonfire to refill before the next push. That's the ritual.

Your build stops working on some desecrated shard, so you perform the ritual, burn the run down, and come back stronger in black wax. That's the ritual.

You spend an evening not fighting at all, just rearranging a skill tree around a seal you unlocked an hour ago. That's the ritual.

How the systems actually work

The currency stack is the first thing to learn: gold, rubies, black wax, shards and energy all interlock, and disassembling unwanted weapons yields iron and steel for upgrading the gear you keep. Character growth branches through Strength, Dexterity and Wisdom, each opening its own skill trees and passive playstyles. The Ritual is the prestige reset: it wipes your immediate run and pays out black wax, which buys powerful global bonuses. Beyond that sit linear shards and galaxy jumps that scale difficulty and introduce modifiers while keeping certain permanent bonuses, and seals, the Warrior, Pagan and Connexion choices, that tailor which skill-tree routes and mask multipliers you can fast-track.

The r/grimclicker community guide is genuinely essential reading, and its landmarks are specific. The cheap no-name dagger is the early-game weapon of choice, its upgrade potential pushed with a Stone of Dominance. For idle-leaning players, investing heavily in the March skill produces a strong damage-over-time AFK build. And matching your seal to your attribute path matters: Warrior Seal for quick Fire Mask access, Pagan Seal for critical and growth setups.

Where it grates

Three complaints recur. First, the idle misnomer itself: true set-and-forget automation is largely absent, and efficient play means babysitting dash abilities and restarting loops by hand. Second, early-game brick walls: progress is tied to finding build synergies, and players who cannot figure that part out get stuck hard, one Steam reviewer noting the progression barely differed after five hours except that it got slower. Third, the long middle can stagnate, with late-game pacing slowing drastically and few fresh mechanics arriving to break it up. Next to automation-titan games like clicker heroes it demands far more of your attention and gives back build depth in exchange.

The verdict

A free, dark, surprisingly deep build-crafting RPG that mislabels itself as a clicker. If the words "ritual", "black wax" and "galaxy jump" sound like a good evening, it costs nothing to find out.
