Grow! - Incremental Survivor
A solo-dev mashup where you evolve from an atom to a star while dodging waves: incremental meets survivor.
by Thibault Brouardelle · 3 Jun 2026 · iOS
The most interesting indie games happen when two genres collide and neither wins, and Grow! - Incremental Survivor is a textbook collision. Thibault Brouardelle's solo project fuses exponential incremental growth with Vampire Survivors-style wave action, and gives it a hook no competitor has: your physical scale is the progression ladder. You begin as subatomic matter and end, if you climb far enough, as a star.
What the loop feels like
A run starts at the bottom: you are an atom dodging enemies your own size, absorbing the matter they drop. Kills feed XP, level-ups offer randomized weapons, stats and gear, and the survivor rhythm of dodge-and-vacuum takes over. Then the incremental layer asserts itself: clear enough waves and you evolve up the cosmic ladder, nucleon to molecule to bacteria to insect to animal to human to satellite to planet, each tier a genuinely different arena of scale. That's Grow!
Pushing higher permanently broadens your scope, feeding meta-progression: new equipment across runs, harder modes like Hell difficulty and Last Stand, and high-risk rifts that trade danger for rewards. The exponential resets of an idle game and the run-based resets of a survivor game stack on top of each other, and neither cancels the other out. That's Grow!

The systems doing the work
The named systems are scale-based evolution as the core ladder, absorb-and-clear wave combat, in-run leveling with randomized picks, the cosmic ladder as permanent meta-progression, and the equipment and rift layer for endgame depth. Community reception has been warm: players single out the seamless conceptual jump from particles to cosmos, the lack of forced ads or paywalls, and the genuine mechanical twist of having to actually move, something pure incrementals never ask.

Where it stumbles
It is a compact indie passion project, and players are honest about the ceiling: genre veterans note it lacks the hundreds-of-hours endgame complexity of the big web-based incrementals, and heavily optimized players can find the content brief. The survivor combat is serviceable rather than deep, and the solo-dev scale means fewer systems, modes and polish layers than bigger hybrids. What is here is well-made; there is just less of it than genre addicts will want.
Playing it today
It is free on the App Store for iOS with non-intrusive monetization, and highly rated in its first months. If the mashup appeals, The Gnorp Apologue scratches a similar solo-dev exponential itch, and Matter of Scale plays with the same bigness-of-scale humor.
The verdict
Grow! - Incremental Survivor is a genuinely creative free hybrid: one clean idea, executed with care, that respects your time and wallet. Its ceiling is low for hardcore players, but as a few weeks of atom-to-star dopamine it overdelivers.
