Matter of Scale

Hamlet to stellar domain: a CSS/DOM realm-grower, defunct with its Bitbucket host.

by unconfirmed (MrSpuds attribution NOT verified, flagged) · 2014 · Web (defunct)

Matter of Scale begins with a Hamlet and, per its own pitch, ends with a transcendental domain among the stars. The realm grows from hamlets to villages to towns to stranger, larger things. The game itself went the other way: it has shrunk to a defunct URL, a Wayback capture of some JavaScript files, and a thumbnail on a listing site.

It was built by a pseudonymous developer posting as astarsearcher, hosted on Bitbucket's pages service in the mid-2010s, and written with no image assets at all: the Wayback captures of its component scripts, environment file and achievements list confirm a pure CSS and DOM UI. A realm-grower made of text and boxes, in the oldest browser-incremental tradition.

What the loop feels like

You hire workers, the workers gather resources, and each location has a goal to meet. Meet it and the location completes, then combines with its neighbours into something bigger: hamlets merge into villages, villages into towns, and the ladder keeps climbing. That's Matter of Scale.

And the location type itself becomes the reward: bigger settlements hand you free workers or adjust your costs and production rates, so growth compounds into more growth. The pitch says the ladder runs all the way to a domain spanning the stars. That's Matter of Scale.

Workers, locations and the ladder

The design is a settlement ladder in the kingdom-builder lineage, closer to a text realm-grower than a clicker: resources buy workers, workers fill location goals, and completed locations reorganise into higher types whose bonuses feed the next tier. Everything above that shape comes from the surviving description on the Almost Idle listing, because the game itself no longer runs and the archive holds code, not guides. There was a small subreddit attached to the listing, and an unofficial React and Redux clone of the original exists on GitHub under dwhiffing's account, which at least confirms where the source lived.

Where it stumbles

It stumbles into the ground, mostly. The original site now serves a frameset pointing at a Bitbucket pages address that answers with an error, because Bitbucket discontinued the service; the game is unplayable at its source. The only surviving imagery is a 150-pixel listing thumbnail. And disambiguation is a live hazard: an unrelated namesake called A Matter Of Scale, a puzzle-platformer from a different maker, exists on itch.io. Do not confuse the two, and do not trust alternate author attributions either: a MrSpuds credit circulates without any source behind it.

Playing it today

The Almost Idle listing preserves the description and links. The Wayback Machine holds captures of the game's scripts from 2014 to 2016, though with no runnable host they are an epitaph rather than a way to play. The unofficial GitHub clone is the only reproduction this entry can point at.

The verdict

An epitaph entry: a neat settlement-ladder idea from the browser-idle boom, filed now under historical rather than playable. If the hamlets-to-stars pitch appeals, the clone and the archive captures are where its bones are buried.
