Miner

A minimalist dig: one hole, one upgrade list, one pleasant afternoon.

by GlorifiedPig · 20 May 2018 · Web

In May 2018 a developer called GlorifiedPig put a small game called Miner on Kongregate and left it there. It is still up, which already makes it more durable than most of what launched beside it, and its one-line pitch has aged better than its graphics: mine, grow your reputation, assist in the development of technology.

The whole design fits in minimalist 2D and a couple of colours. The tags on its own page say the same thing in the platform's dialect: Mining, Idle, Clicker, Incremental, Minimalism.

What the loop feels like

You dig down, you sell what you dug up, and the proceeds buy the thing that digs faster. That's Miner.

Reputation climbs, the technology line advances, and the shaft keeps deepening until an afternoon has quietly gone somewhere. That's Miner.

Reputation and technology

The Kongregate description is honest about what the game actually measures: a reputation track and a technology-development track, both fed by the dig. The dig itself is the minimalist constant, one shaft and one upgrade row, with the numbers ticking over while you decide which of the two tracks to feed next. Nothing hides behind the interface: the joy is the arithmetic of a hole getting deeper.

Miner Kongregate icon

One media note this entry keeps plainly: the only verified art is the 256-pixel Kongregate icon above. Earlier automated drafts dressed this page in art from a different, larger Steam mining game, wrong hero, wrong screenshots, wrong store page, and that mistake has been stripped out entirely rather than papered over.

Where it stumbles

The community verdict was never warm: ratings on its Kongregate page sit low, and the update record stopped within weeks of launch in mid-2018, after which the game simply stayed as it was. It is also easy to lose track of, because the mining premise attaches to several bigger games and this entry itself spent time conflated with one of them before being corrected.

Playing it today

It runs free on the original Kongregate page, in a browser, and the small community that remembers it keeps a footprint at the r/PlanetMiner subreddit. The developer's old handheld listing is dead and stays dead, removed from this entry rather than left to error out. If you want the same digging fantasy at modern scale, Keep On Mining! is the bigger Steam take this entry was once confused with.

The verdict

A modest game, correctly sized. If the genre's hundred-hour monsters feel like a commitment, this is the snack-sized version of the same pleasure: numbers, depth, upgrades, done. Some games just need to be a nice afternoon in a hole.
