Anthill
Click sugar, hatch ants, build the hill: a 2016 hobbyist ant colony that never left v0.1.
by u/math625f · 6 March 2016 · Web (defunct)
Anthill is a 2016 browser clicker by a hobbyist who described their own HTML knowledge as limited, and it is exactly what that sounds like: click a photograph of sugar, hatch ants with the sugar, and build your colony one sugarcube factory at a time.
It was posted to r/incremental_games in March 2016 by u/math625f, captured by the archive a month later at version 0.1, and never updated again. The domain it lived on, a shadowreaperpro.com subdomain, is gone entirely now, verified dead in this rewrite.
What the loop felt like
You clicked the sugar, the sugar count climbed, and every few purchases a new tier of ant joined the workforce. The colony grew one click at a time, and the game asked nothing else of you. That's Anthill.
Then the sugarcube factory entered the shop, the upgrades started compounding, and the page you were supposed to close for the evening kept producing ants anyway. Also that's Anthill.

The systems doing the work
The archived page markup gives a complete inventory of the design, which is one benefit of a game this small. Sugar was the single currency, earned by clicking and spent on everything else. The workforce came in tiers: workers, scavengers, adventurers, swarms, and flying ants, each a purchasable step up the colony ladder, and the sugarcube factory acted as the upgrade shop where the late-game economy lived. That is the whole document, and it is a perfectly legible one.
What makes it worth an entry is what it represents rather than what it built. The version number never moved past 0.1, which makes it one of the purest snapshots of the hobbyist tier of the genre: someone's weekend project, built with self-admitted limited HTML, shared with a subreddit, and abandoned within the month. Games like this are the sediment the genre sits on, and most of them vanish without a trace. This one at least left an archive capture.
Where it stumbles
Honestly and thoroughly: it was a first draft that never became a second one. There was no progression beyond the ant tiers and the factory, no prestige, no endgame, and no balancing to speak of, because the author stopped before any of that existed. An honesty note on sources: our AI research passes misidentified this title with a well-known commercial ant game, so their output was discarded, and everything here rests on the archived page markup and the original release thread. The real limitation is simpler than any criticism: the game is unplayable and was barely playable then.
Playing it today
You cannot: the host is dead and the April 2016 archive capture is the only record. Whether the captured scripts still run depends on what the crawler caught, and the single-page game offers no offline download to fall back on. The sugar-click icon above is the game's de facto key art, salvaged from the archived page because the game never had a title screen at all.
The verdict
A historical entry, and a fond one: every genre needs its v0.1 curios, its weekend projects that reached exactly one subreddit and stopped. Anthill is documented properly, ants and all, and its brief life is a reminder that the incremental genre has always run on hobbyists trying out one small idea in a browser tab.
