STE: Save the Earth

Aliens invade, you click back: ZakosGames' 2014 defense incremental, Steam-published later.

by ZakosGames · 2014 · Web (Kongregate) / Steam

STE: Save the Earth is ZakosGames’ 2014 browser incremental, and its premise is the pitch: aliens are invading Earth, and the planet survives on your clicking. Gather resources with clicks and hovers, pour them into upgrades and defenses, and hold the line while your economy catches up. It first ran on Kongregate during the portal’s golden stretch, then earned the rarer second act of a Steam release, which puts it in a small club of Kong-era clickers that outgrew the browser.

What the loop feels like

The first scene is a resource rhythm. You click and hover to strip incoming objects for materials, and every gathered pile feeds the next purchase, because defense in this game is not free: a cannon, a shield, an upgrade, each one is bought with what you just scraped together under time pressure.

The second scene is the slow inversion. Your purchased upgrades start doing the gathering for you, the click budget shifts from survival to acceleration, and the invasion that demanded every input now mostly watches you compound. That’s STE: Save the Earth.

Where it stumbles

Honest gaps first: independent coverage of this game is thin, so the fine detail of its upgrade tree and late-game balance is hard to reconstruct from living sources. What can be said plainly is that it belongs to the 2014 school of clickers, where active input matters and layered automation trees are modest by modern standards. Players raised on decade-later incrementals will find the ceiling low, and the Kong version shows its age in presentation.

Playing it today

Both routes still work: it is free on Kongregate and paid on Steam, both from ZakosGames, with a fan wiki preserving the community’s knowledge. If you want newer defense-flavored idlers, Spaceplan and Soda Dungeon take the same alien-shooting premise further.

The verdict

A solid Kong-era defense incremental with the rare Kong-to-Steam promotion: click the aliens, then buy the nicer version.
