The Garden

Ben Morris's ecology sim: balance the plants, balance the animals, watch the ecosystem wobble.

The Garden is Ben Morris's 2015 Kongregate ecology sim, announced as Incremental game. Manage and balance an ecosystem of plants and animals, which is both the description and the whole design: predator and prey populations, plant spreads, and the delicate art of not letting either win. The Flash build is dead (the Kongregate page now serves a generic template), the developer's repo path 404s, and the Kongregate icon was recovered from a 2016 archived page for this entry.

What the loop felt like

You plant a seed, the seed feeds a rabbit, and the rabbits eat the garden you were growing. That's The Garden.

The official pitch promised that the longer you play, the more the garden evolves, and the sim part meant the garden had opinions of its own. Populations rise and crash on their own schedules, your management nudges a system that never fully obeys, and the incremental part is just the clock that lets you watch it happen. That's The Garden.

How it actually worked

The design, per its own listing, was an ecology simulation wearing an incremental's clothes. Management and balance were the verbs: plants and animals formed a living system where predator and prey populations and plant spread interacted, and the player's role was to keep the whole thing from collapsing in either direction. Idle progression and automation carried the tending between visits, the standard Kongregate-era arrangement where the sim runs and you steer. That is the whole verifiable systems picture: a one-line official description, a Reddit announcement from September 2015, and mechanics tags the entry preserves rather than embellishes. It was a small Flash game with a big idea, and the idea was that the numbers should eat each other.

Where it went

Flash happened, as it did to nearly everything on this shelf. The game is unplayable in a modern browser, the Kongregate page survives only as a template shell, and no repository or remaster surfaced in research. One asset remains: the full-size Kongregate icon, recovered from the archived 2016 page with its source URL intact in the sidecar, which is why this entry runs icon-only and says so. Research also disambiguated against two unrelated same-titled games on other platforms, so what is documented here belongs to Morris's garden and nothing else. If a Flash preservation project ever resurrects it, the entry can grow again; until then it is an icon and a pitch.

Playing it today

Not in a browser. For living games with adjacent instincts, Garden In tends a calmer plant-growing idle and Cornerpond keeps a similarly small, living pond. The ecology-as-numbers idea has better preservation luck elsewhere in the catalog than it does here.

The verdict

A lovely ecological idea, Flash-dead like its neighbors, remembered here by its icon and its perfect one-line pitch.
