The Gold Factory
gamehelp16's Candy Box-descendant ASCII factory, kept golden by an active fan remake.
by gamehelp16 (u/gamehlp16) · 2013 · Web (GitHub Pages)
The Gold Factory is gamehelp16's 2013 ASCII incremental, a Candy Box descendant about running a factory that makes gold, with its own subreddit, a fandom wiki, and a JayIsGames review from December 2013 that settled its date. The original still runs at gamehelp16.github.io, and the story's second act is better: voxelbugged's active fan remake, The Gold Factory: Regilded, updated as recently as December 2025 on its own GitHub Pages and on galaxy.click, where it has gathered thousands of plays.
What the loop feels like
You smelt a bar, the bar buys a machine, and the machine smelts faster. That's The Gold Factory.
There is nothing to look at while it happens, and that is the aesthetic thesis. Like its Candy Box ancestors, the game asks you to read instead of watch: a factory that exists only as characters on a page, active clicking to keep things moving, idle progression to keep them moving while you are gone. The screen is a ledger and the ledger is the game. That's The Gold Factory.
How it actually works
The documented loop pairs the genre's two oldest verbs, active clicking and idle progression, inside a factory frame: production earns, earnings buy production, and the text readout tracks the whole economy. The game is open source, hosted as a static browser page, and has never had official art of any kind; every image associated with it, including the thumbnail on this entry, belongs to the remake listing and is labelled as such. What gives the entry its shape is the afterlife. The community kept two subreddits, r/thegoldfactory and r/TGFRegilded, plus a Fandom wiki. And voxelbugged's Regilded remake took the original's source and returned it to active maintenance, updated a decade after the fact, listed separately on galaxy.click, and playable for free.
Where it stumbles
The honest caveats are preservation-shaped rather than design-shaped. There is no official art anywhere, so there is nothing to show you that is actually the 2013 game. The original depends on the continued goodwill of a GitHub Pages account, the same infrastructure class that has killed half the browser canon. The remake is a fan's reading of the source rather than an authorial continuation, which is the standard trade of the fan-remake model. And by 2013 text-idle standards the systems are simple: two verbs and a ledger, without the layered prestige architectures the genre grew into later. Nobody minds, exactly, but nobody should arrive expecting depth.
Playing it today
Both versions, free: the 2013 original and the Regilded remake, which also keeps a listing on galaxy.click. For the rest of the text-idle lineage this descends from, Candy Box 2 is the family's landmark.
The verdict
A Candy Box-lineage text idle with the genre's best afterlife: not one but two playable versions, one actively maintained a decade on.
