Bead Machine: Punktasia

A text-based machine-builder about making beads, by the developer of the Punktasia family.

Bead Machine: Punktasia is a text-based machine-building incremental by u/weatheredclown, listed complete in the genre wiki, and it is the rare game whose move to a new host improved it: the original Google Drive release link has been superseded by a stable Firebase home, live and current at bead-machine.firebaseapp.com.

What the loop feels like

You buy mechanical pieces from a vending machine, place them on a grid, and wire their inputs and outputs into something that actually produces. The machine makes beads, and the beads buy better machine parts. That's Bead Machine.

The contraption grows from a single bead-press into a factory of interlocking parts, in Adventure or Sandbox mode, and somewhere around the two-million-bead quest you realise you have been engineering for an hour. Also that's Bead Machine.

The systems doing the work

The twist is that the idle loop is a spatial puzzle. Vending machine draws supply the parts, random or specific depending on your spending discipline. Grid assembly is where the game lives: you place components on a modular board and manage directional throughput, routing item inputs through transformation blocks to keep the production chain flowing. Clutter the grid or build a bottleneck and the whole factory chokes on its own beads.

Progression runs on quest milestones, numerical quotas for distinct bead counts that unlock structural upgrades, hidden areas and new shop inventories, with specialised modifier parts arriving via the end-game shop. The numbers scale from absolute values through commas into scientific notation, which is the genre's way of telling you the factory has won. Community strategy is terse and correct: keep the grid clean, chase the early two-million-bead quest to trigger the automation and interface updates, and balance blind vending pulls against saving for the parts you actually need.

Where it stumbles

The presentation is the sticking point for most players: pure text and CSS, with no images anywhere in the codebase, which is either the whole charm or an instant nope depending on your tolerance for reading a factory. Onboarding is similarly spartan, with the routing logic left for players to work out through experimentation. And as a compact hobbyist project it has a finite arc: complete, in the wiki's judgment, but not deep, with the endgame shop arriving not long after the notation does.

Playing it today

Live and playable at bead-machine.firebaseapp.com (the original googledrive.com link is superseded, noted in the research), free in any browser, at version 1.16 as of this writing. The screenshot above was captured live from the running build: that opening screen is the only real art the game has, because the game is the machine.

The verdict

A machine-building text incremental with two modes and no images anywhere in its codebase: the rare game that is exactly as complex as its wiki row says it is. The spatial-puzzle twist on the idle loop is genuinely clever, the quota structure gives it spine, and the price of admission is learning to love a factory made of words. Complete, free, and quietly absorbing.
