Farm of Souls

Siveran's 2011 Flash god-game: make people die happy, harvest the souls, run the afterlife farm.

by Siveran · 23 January 2011 · Web (Flash, defunct)

Farm of Souls is Siveran's 2011 Flash god-game with the gentlest possible presentation wrapped around the grimmest mechanic in the genre: the people you tend are livestock, the harvest is their deaths, and your crop is souls. Make them die happy, because a happy death pays better. It was made for Game in Ten Days #10, theme: Death, which tells you the jam had a sense of humor about itself.

What the loop feels like

You tend the living, the living die happy, and their happy souls plant your next field. That's Farm of Souls.

Press space and new people appear, setting about building stashes and towns on the land you have prepared. Their happiness accumulates over their lives, and when they die, your soul yield scales with how content they were at the end. The souls buy upgrades that make the next generation live better, which means they die better, which means the farm grows. Generations stack, the towns thicken, and the ledger of happy deaths compounds. That's Farm of Souls.

The named systems

The documented systems are compact. Soul harvesting is the core: people yield souls on death based on their happiness level. Population creation is one keypress away, with your people autonomously building stashes and towns. The upgrade layer spends harvested souls on improvements that raise the next generation's happiness ceiling, closing the loop. Underneath it all sits the god-game frame of a 2011 Flash title: pixel presentation, small canvas, and a management layer measured in lives rather than gold.

Where it stumbles

The first obstacle is survival: this is an Adobe Flash game, and Flash died in December 2020. The original Kongregate build is unplayable without Flash emulation such as Ruffle or a preserved SWF, and mirrors on Y8 and FunGames rise or fall with the same technology. The second is scope: it is a small, early piece of the genre, a jam game, and its loop resolves completely within a modest session. Depth chasers will find the ceiling quickly.

Playing it today

The original home is Kongregate, with mirrors on Y8 and FunGames, all Flash-era and all dependent on emulation to run. The developer's tumblr remains the one same-dev destination: siveran.tumblr.com. Treat it as a preserved piece of genre history rather than a living game.

The verdict

A historical entry, and one of the genre's early art-pieces: a god game where the resource is death, handled with more care than the premise deserves. Its mechanics are modest and its mortality is the message. If you can get it running through emulation, it remains a quietly strange half hour.
