MiniTES

A mini transcend: Taylor Calderone's text incremental, alive under a lowercase URL the wiki never found.

by Taylor Calderone (ex-Bovinedragon Software) · 2013 · Web (taylorcalderone.com)

MiniTES, the mini Transcend, is Taylor Calderone's text-based browser incremental, developed from 2013 to 2021 and left, like a good garden tool, exactly where you can find it: live at the official launcher. The genre wiki's old link 404s over a single letter of capitalisation; the lowercase URL works, verified live, and the author's own portfolio links it correctly. It is the kind of oversight that nearly wrote a small, careful game out of history.

The author's pedigree is better than the game's size suggests: Calderone was lead iOS developer at Bovinedragon Software, whose Trace games reached millions of installs, and previously maintained Microsoft's zone.msn.com. MiniTES is the retirement-project end of that résumé, released as an HTML5 page that opens in a small popup window and never asks for more screen than that.

What the loop feels like

You grind, the grind transcends, and the transcend starts a grind again. That's MiniTES.

Between resets, the game's own scripts name its three preoccupations: an adventure list to walk through, grinding to feed the numbers, and combat to spend them on. You pick an adventure, grind until the numbers let you survive it, fight, and file the result toward the next transcend. That's MiniTES.

What the text actually does

There are no images in the game at all: the play window is pure text and DOM, which the style record confirms and the file listing proves. The visual record is two files, a promo image from the author's portfolio and a favicon. Everything else happens in variables, functions and lists, which the author documented in a companion article, Worldbuilding MiniTES through randomization, still live on the same domain and still the best writing about the game anywhere.

Where it stumbles

No AI research pass, no guide ecosystem and no community beyond its small subreddit exist for this game, so its systems can only be described at the level its own code names support, and this entry flags that gap rather than padding it. The presentation is the other honest limit: a text window is the genre at its most austere, and players who need feedback beyond words bouncing in a 689x448 popup will bounce first.

Playing it today

It runs free in a browser at the launcher page, complete and unmaintained, a finished thing. Text-incremental neighbours on this site include A Dark Room for the same austere trust in words, and Candy Box 2 for the gradual-RPG shape with more decoration.

The verdict

A real, live, well-documented text incremental that one capital letter nearly wrote out of history: small, austere, and exactly as finished as it intends to be.
