Level 13
The 13th level of a layered city: a text sci-fi settlement builder from the Evolve developer.
by nroutasuo (Nick Routasuo) · 2016 · Web (GitHub Pages)
Level 13 is nroutasuo's text-based sci-fi settlement builder, set on the thirteenth level of a dark, decayed City in a layered vertical metropolis, and the author's other credit is the reason to pay attention: this is the same developer as Evolve, sitting higher in this index. It is alpha and has been since early 2017, but the GitHub Pages build still runs, the code is open, and it has kept its own small community the whole time.
What the loop feels like
You build a camp, the camp draws survivors, and the survivors dig into the ruins above and below. Technologies are rediscovered as much as invented, the game's own summary puts it well: you are surviving in the City while relearning old knowledge and unlocking new levels of the metropolis. That's Level 13.
The scale pulls outward over time. An underground settlement becomes a mapped world, a world map becomes an economy of expeditions, and the text panels quietly accumulate into one of the slower, moodier exercises in the browser-incremental canon. Nothing here rushes you, and the alpha wears that patience as a feature. That's Level 13.

The systems doing the work
From the research record, without an AI Mode pass to lean on, the verified pillars are: settlement management, technology rediscovery, world map exploration and level unlocking, wrapped in a story-rich, open-source text presentation. The camp is the engine, the map is the frontier, and the vertical City is the progression ladder. Honesty note: with no AI Mode run for this entry, finer mechanical detail stays unlisted rather than invented.
Where it stumbles
The alpha label is the honest headline: it has been in alpha for years, and nobody should expect the polish cadence of a finished game. The pace is slow even by text-idle standards, and the community is small, a dedicated subreddit rather than a crowd. Players who want charts, tooltips and hand-holding will bounce; this is a quiet game for people who liked the quiet parts of Evolve.
Playing it today
Playable free at the the official GitHub Pages home, with the source on GitHub. Favicon assets on the page 404 at our check, noted and excluded. If the settlement-builder itch needs scratching at greater depth, Evolve is the same author's bigger, more finished machine.
The verdict
An alpha with pedigree: slower and quieter than Evolve, but with the same careful hand, and still officially served. Watch it, wishlist it in spirit, and check in when the City digs deeper.
