War Tortoise

Nature's strongest battle tank rolls out with Mouse Rangers and Howitzer Beetles in tow. An idle shooter where the idle part actually looks like something.

by Foursaken Media · 27 Mar, 2024 · Steam (Windows / Mac) + Steam Deck

Somewhere between a clicker and a third-person shooter sits a tortoise with a cannon. Foursaken Media, veterans of the mobile idle-shooter hybrid, brought the concept to Steam in March 2024: an idle game with an actual 3D battlefield, where your job is to roll a heavily armed tortoise across a hostile world, capture outposts, and build a small army of rodents, beetles and heroes that keeps fighting while you take your hands off the wheel. The Steam release adapts the later mobile game, and the adaptation is the story: every microtransaction and gacha element has been stripped out and the economy rebalanced so gems and gear arrive through play.

The texture of the game comes from its cast. Mouse Rangers, Hamster Commandos and giant Howitzer Beetles fight alongside you, pilots and heroes stack bonuses, and legendary tortoise variants, zombie, dragon and mecha among them, change how a run plays rather than just how big the numbers get.

What the loop feels like

The turret fires on its own, the rodents fan out, and the wildlife breaks against your shell. That's War Tortoise.

You roll forward, plant a flag on an outpost, and the war rank ticks up while a gold mine starts paying rent. That's War Tortoise.

You hit a wall, ascend, and come back with permanent mutations that turn yesterday's boss into today's warm-up. That's War Tortoise, and the wall-hitting is not a failure state, it is the heartbeat.

War Tortoise gameplay

Logistics, not just shooting

The layer that separates it from tap-to-kill apps is infrastructure. Captured territory feeds resources like lumber and food, which build roads, outposts, lumber mills and laboratories that physically extend your reach and passive income. War rank unlocks higher-tier areas and tech trees. Between pushes, fishing spots offer a genuinely weird sidebar: sitting still and fishing earns powerful permanent abilities. Equipment comes as physical gear loadouts for the tortoise itself, light through heavy weapons plus turret slots, and the community's standard advice is to max the digger upgrade early for passive rare-resource income and to buy gear in bulk for better rolls.

Where it stumbles

The grind is real and sometimes slow, and once your automation is fully online the active game largely plays itself, which some players find purposeless after a dozen hours. Late-game battles turn into visual soup, with dozens of units, missiles and ability effects crowding the screen hard enough to cost frames and hide the action. The push-and-ascend loop is the genre's oldest trick, here wearing nicer clothes. None of these complaints stopped a Very Positive Steam reception, which centres almost entirely on how much better the game feels with monetisation surgically removed.

Playing it today

On Steam at a premium-mobile-ported price, Windows and Mac, with full controller support and Steam Deck support. The mobile lineage is real, and the original Foursaken mobile titles exist separately, but this Steam build is the version without the monetisation machinery.

The verdict

The rare idle game where watching the numbers go up is also watching something worth looking at, with enough strategic plumbing, outposts, roads, mutations, heroes, to survive the genre's usual ceiling. Patience is the price of admission. For idlers with a combat streak, Tap Titans and Almost a Hero cover the 2D side, Soda Dungeon 2 leans further into team management, and Swag and Sorcery is the budget RPG-grinder alternative.
